Brand Intelligence

History & Background

Carroll Shelby founded Shelby American in 1962 in Los Angeles after winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959. The AC Cobra (1962) and Shelby GT350 Mustang (1965) made the brand legendary. Ford partnered with Shelby to produce performance Mustangs through the late 1960s. After a hiatus, Carroll Shelby returned to the brand in the 1990s and it has operated continuously since. Carroll Shelby passed away in 2012 but the company continues building cars under his name.

Corporate Structure

Ownership & Corporate Structure

Shelby American is controlled by Carroll Shelby International, a holding company that manages the Shelby brand and licensing. It operates as an independent specialty builder with formal licensing agreements with Ford Motor Company that allow Shelby to modify, badge, and warrant Mustang-based vehicles.

Common Questions

Shelby American FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Shelby American. Independent editorial answers — not sponsored.

Does Shelby still work with Ford? +
Yes. Shelby American has a formal licensing and vehicle modification agreement with Ford Motor Company. The Shelby GT500 is produced by Ford and then optionally sent to Shelby for additional modifications. Shelby GT-branded vehicles carry Ford warranties.
How rare are Shelby cars? +
Very rare. Shelby American produces approximately 1,000 vehicles per year total, hand-building each one in Las Vegas. Each car has a serialized dash plaque and is registered in the Shelby World Registry — a database maintained by the company since Carroll Shelby's era.
What is the difference between a Shelby GT500 and a regular Mustang GT500? +
The standard GT500 is factory-produced by Ford with Shelby badging (Ford pays Shelby a licensing fee). A 'Shelby-modified' Super Snake is then sent to Shelby American after factory production for further upgrades — engine work, body kit, interior changes, and a higher price.

ⓘ Recall repairs are always free at authorized dealers, regardless of vehicle age, mileage, or ownership status.
📱 OTA vs Dealer Recall Repair — What’s the Difference? +
📱 OTA Update
Software-only fix pushed wirelessly. No dealer visit required. Common on Tesla, GM (Super Cruise), Ford (Sync), and newer models.
🔧 Dealer Repair
Physical parts replacement or mechanical repair required. Must schedule dealer appointment. Always free under recall.

ⓘ NHTSA determines recall remedy type. OTA-resolved recalls still appear in NHTSA history — check that your vehicle's remedy has been applied.
