"Electric vehicles for the adventurous." Rivian builds adventure-focused electric vehicles with a quad-motor platform that delivers exceptional off-road capability and towing. The R1T was the first electric pickup to reach production in America.
Rivian produces the R1T electric truck and R1S electric SUV from its Normal, IL factory. The R2 platform targeting mainstream buyers at ~$45K is in development.
As an EV startup, Rivian has limited long-term reliability data. Early R1T/R1S owners report strong performance but some early-build quality issues. Rivian's OTA updates continue to address software-related complaints. J.D. Power initial quality ranks are improving.
Founded in 2009 by Robert "RJ" Scaringe, Rivian was largely unknown until a 2018 auto show reveal. Amazon invested $700M in 2019, followed by Ford's $500M (later divested). Rivian went public in November 2021 at the largest US IPO of that year. Production at Normal, IL began 2021.
Rivian Automotive (RIVN) is publicly traded. Major shareholders include Amazon (~17%), Volkswagen Group (which formed a joint EV venture with Rivian), and institutional investors. CEO and founder RJ Scaringe holds significant voting control.
Rivian R1T and R1S have had several NHTSA recalls, typical for a first-generation EV platform. Notable items: a 2022 loose fastener recall, a 2023 brake recall, and a 2024 OTA for thermal management. All have been addressed.
