Overview
The 2025 Rivian R1T is America's original electric pickup — launched in 2021, it predates the Lightning and Cybertruck. Rivian builds the R1T in Normal, Illinois, and it remains the most adventure-focused electric truck available.
For 2025, Rivian updated the exterior design with cleaner lines, added the Max Pack option, and standardized NACS. The R1T competes with the F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck — winning on off-road capability and range.
The R1T is built at Rivian's Normal, IL assembly plant — making it one of the few truly American-made EVs from a startup. Rivian also operates a service center network across the US.

Range & Charging
Large Pack EPA range ~352 miles; at 70 mph expect ~274 miles. Cold weather reduces range ~15–20%. Towing at max capacity reduces range 45–55% — budget 175–200 miles per charge when towing near max.
Rivian's Trip Planner app integrates charging stops into routes automatically. For off-road adventures, the R1T can drive to remote areas and recover most range overnight on a 240V campsite hookup.
The Max Pack delivers 410 miles EPA — the longest range of any electric pickup. DC fast charging at 200 kW adds approximately 140 miles in 20 minutes. NACS connector is standard across all configurations.
The Large Pack (352 miles) is the most popular choice — adequate range for most adventure trips without the premium of the Max Pack.
Towing & Off-Road
Towing 11,000 lb reduces range 50–55%. For a 200-mile towing trip, plan at least one DC fast charge stop. Rivian recommends charging to 100% (vs daily 80%) for towing days.
Max tow of 11,000 lb exceeds the Ford F-150 Lightning (9,100 lb) and Cybertruck AWD (11,000 lb, tied). Air suspension lowers for easy trailer hookup. Rivian's Trailer Backup Assist manages trailer angle intuitively.
Air suspension, standard locking differentials, and a wade mode (water fording up to 34 inches) make the R1T one of the most capable off-road electric trucks available.
Unique Features
No other truck — gas or electric — has a lockable, weatherproof pass-through storage tunnel between the cab and bed. This is genuinely useful for overlanding, camping, and keeping gear separated from tools.
The Gear Tunnel is a lockable pass-through storage compartment behind the cab — unique to the R1T globally. It fits two sets of skis, a tool set, a camp kitchen, or a compressed air compressor (standard on Adventure+ package).
Camp Kitchen slides out of the Gear Tunnel and includes a two-burner stove, fridge, and sink — an optional accessory unique to Rivian's ecosystem.
Reliability
Rivian R1T reliability has improved significantly since the difficult 2021–2022 launch. 2023+ production is substantially better. Quality concerns remain vs established automakers but trend is positive.
