Dodge Challenger β€” A Legacy

Production ended after the 2023 model year. The Challenger ran for 16 years as the last true American V8 pony car with a live rear axle. The 1,025-hp Demon 170 was its final act β€” the most powerful muscle car ever produced.

Overview

The Dodge Challenger ran from 2008 to 2023 β€” 16 model years on the same LX platform, continuously updated. It was the last traditional American V8 pony car with a live rear axle, and the Demon 170 was its most extreme expression.

Cultural Icon

The Challenger was the car of the Fast & Furious era, the car of drag strips and burnout videos, the car that kept the V8 muscle tradition alive into the 2020s. Its discontinuation marks the genuine end of an American automotive era.

TOWING HWY EST

EPA highway rating measured at 55 mph. Real-world highway at 70 mph is typically 19–21 mpg. Towing near max capacity reduces highway fuel economy 25–35% β€” budget accordingly for trailer trips.

HEMI Legacy

The 6.2L supercharged HEMI in the Hellcat produced 717 hp β€” more than Bugatti Veyron had at launch. In a $70K muscle car. It remains the benchmark for accessible American supercar performance.

The Challenger used the 6.4L 392 HEMI (485 hp) and 6.2L supercharged HEMI (717 hp Hellcat) β€” two of the most beloved American V8 engines ever. The 392 delivered raw, accessible V8 performance at a reasonable price.

Demon 170 β€” Final Act

1.66 Seconds

The Demon 170's 1.66-second 0–60 is faster than any production car ever made when it launched. It beat Bugatti Chiron, Koenigsegg Jesko, and every exotic costing 10Γ— as much. American engineering at its most defiant.

The SRT Demon 170 was Dodge's farewell gift to V8 fans. Running on E85 fuel, it produced 1,025 hp and 0–60 in 1.66 seconds β€” setting a world production car record. Only 3,300 were built; all sold out instantly.

Buy Now Logic

If you want a V8 Challenger, buy now. Prices are only going up as supply diminishes and the emotional significance of the last-gen American V8 muscle car grows. Low-mileage Hellcats and Demon 170s are already investment-grade.

Challenger values have appreciated since the end of production announcement. Hellcat models in good condition are holding $60–75K. Demon 170s are trading at $120K–$180K at auction. Last Call special editions are seeing similar premiums.

Reliability

The Challenger's LX platform is extremely well-understood after 16 years. The V8 engines are highly reliable when maintained. Common issues are minor β€” supercharger oil changes (Hellcat) and coolant system on high-HP variants.
