⚡ What Changed · March 2026
1.2L 3-Cylinder Base Engine (New)
New 3-cylinder turbo replaces the previous 1.5L. Smaller displacement but comparable real-world efficiency. 137 hp — adequate for solo/two-passenger daily driving, but noticeably underpowered when fully loaded.
1.5L 4-Cylinder: The Practical Choice
175 hp 1.5L turbo is the sweet spot for most buyers — adequate power for family loads, better highway passing, still achieves ~29 mpg. Recommend over base 3-cyl for most buyers.
Denali: Premium Trim at $38K
Heated steering, leather seating, premium audio, wireless charging. At ~$38,000 the Denali Terrain competes with entry-level luxury crossovers — a genuine value proposition.
AT4 Off-Road Trim Available
AT4 brings raised suspension, all-terrain tires, and AWD with off-road modes. Not a serious off-roader by any measure, but handles dirt roads and light trails competently.

Ownership Overview

Who Is the GMC Terrain For?

Buyers who want the GMC brand identity and Denali-tier refinement in a compact crossover. Buyers who want AT4 appearance with light off-road capability at a lower price than the larger GMC models.

✅ STRENGTHS
  • ✓ Denali trim delivers near-premium spec at compact SUV price
  • ✓ Available AT4 off-road edition with all-terrain tires
  • ✓ Refined GMC styling differentiates from Equinox sibling
  • ✓ Strong fuel economy for the segment
  • ✓ Available AWD on all trims above base
⚠ CONSIDERATIONS
  • ⚠ 137hp 3-cylinder feels strained in highway passing situations
  • ⚠ Shares platform with Equinox — differentiation is styling/trim only
  • ⚠ Smaller cargo space vs Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4
  • ⚠ No EV option (Equinox EV is the EV choice in this size class)
  • ⚠ Made in Mexico — not eligible for domestic content incentives

Buying a Used Terrain

💰 USED PRICING (MARCH 2026 EST.)
2022–2023 Terrain SLE: ~$24,000–$29,000. 2024 Terrain AT4: ~$30,000–$35,000. Terrain holds moderate resale value — competes well against Equinox and Trax in the used market.
Verify at Edmunds / Carfax before purchase. Editorial estimates only.
🔍 USED BUYING CHECKLIST
  • Check electronic parking brake recall on 2022–2023 builds (nhtsa.gov)
  • Verify rear camera display OTA fix has been applied
  • Test AWD engagement on all-wheel-drive trims
  • 1.5L preferred over 1.2L 3-cyl for most buyers — verify engine option before purchase
  • Inspect transmission for smooth engagement — 9-speed CVT-style can feel hesitant
  • Check infotainment version and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto function
🔋 DEPRECIATION & VALUE
  • GM vehicles depreciate faster than Toyota/Honda in the compact/midsize segment
  • Denali and AT4 trims retain value better than base trims
  • Always compare CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) from GMC dealer vs private market — warranty value varies
  • Avoid high-mileage examples without full GM dealer service history

FAQ · Schema Marked Up

GMC Terrain — Common Questions

The most searched questions — answered with data.

The Terrain and Equinox share the same platform, but the Terrain positions slightly higher with the Denali trim tier and a more upscale interior. The Equinox EV is only available as a Chevrolet — the Terrain does not have an EV version. Styling is distinct: the Terrain has a bolder grille and more angular exterior. At equivalent trims, the Terrain is priced approximately $2,000–$3,000 higher than the Equinox.
AWD is available on SLE, AT4, and Denali trims. The base SL is FWD only. The AT4 has AWD standard plus all-terrain tires and a skid plate. GMC's AWD system automatically transfers torque front to rear based on conditions.
The 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder (137hp) is adequate for daily urban and suburban driving. It becomes more noticeable when merging onto highways with a full load or when climbing grades. For buyers who frequently drive in hilly terrain or need confident highway passing, the engine's limitations are real. For primarily urban/suburban use, it is efficient and sufficient.
Honda CR-V advantages: more cargo space, stronger reliability reputation, available hybrid (CR-V Hybrid, 40 mpg), better long-term resale value. Terrain advantages: Denali luxury tier, AT4 off-road option, and GMC brand identity. For buyers who prioritize practicality and long-term value, CR-V wins. For buyers who want GMC Premium Brand with a compact footprint, Terrain makes sense.
The current-generation Terrain (2022+) received a mid-cycle refresh. A next-generation redesign using the same platform update as the Equinox is expected. GM has not announced a firm timeline for a full Terrain redesign as of 2026. Buyers seeking the EV option should look at the Chevrolet Equinox EV rather than waiting for a Terrain EV.
