Ownership Overview

Who Is the Ford Transit For?

Commercial operators, delivery businesses, tradespeople, shuttle operators, and fleet managers who need the most broadly supported and configurable full-size van in the US market.

✅ STRENGTHS
  • ✓ America's best-selling full-size van — widest dealer and parts network of any van
  • ✓ Available in RWD, AWD, and all-wheel drive configurations
  • ✓ Transit EV: up to 126-mile range for urban delivery fleets
  • ✓ Most configuration options: 3 lengths, 3 roof heights, cargo and passenger versions
  • ✓ Made in Kansas City, Missouri — fully US-built commercial vehicle
⚠ CONSIDERATIONS
  • ⚠ RWD base limits traction in snow vs ProMaster's FWD (higher floor though)
  • ⚠ Transit EV range (126 mi) below some purpose-built electric vans
  • ⚠ Fuel economy is modest for a commercial van
  • ⚠ High-roof Transit is very tall — bridge clearance an issue for some routes
  • ⚠ Interior tech has lagged behind some competitors in commercial segment
Quick Specs: 16 city / 20 hwy (3.5L EcoBoost) · 18 city / 22 hwy (2.0L EcoBlue diesel)  ·  Built in Kansas City, MO (Kansas City Assembly)  ·  Parent: Ford Motor Company  ·  NHTSA Recalls ↗

FAQ · Schema Marked Up

Ford Transit — Common Questions

The most searched questions — answered with data.

The Transit has led US full-size van sales for years due to its combination of breadth (more configuration options than any competitor), RWD/AWD capability, the widest dealer service network, and proven reliability. It replaced the Ford E-Series in 2015 and quickly became the default choice for commercial fleets. Amazon, FedEx, and many major last-mile delivery operations use the Transit as their primary platform.
ProMaster advantages: lower floor height (FWD platform enables lower loading height), wider interior width. Transit advantages: available AWD (ProMaster is FWD only), higher payload capacity (up to 4,410 lbs vs ProMaster's ~3,600 lbs), much wider dealer service network, and generally stronger resale value. For ease of loading and flat-floor priority, ProMaster wins. For payload, AWD, and service network, Transit wins.
The Transit is available in Regular (148" WB), Long (148" WB extended body), and Extended (148" WB + extended rear) lengths. Roof heights: Low, Medium, and High Roof. Body styles: cargo van, passenger wagon (up to 15 seats), chassis cab (for upfitting), and crew van. This provides approximately 30 configuration combinations, more than any full-size van competitor.
The Ford Transit EV (E-Transit) is EPA-rated at up to 126 miles of range. This is purpose-built for urban last-mile delivery operations where routes are under 100 miles per shift. DC fast charging (48kW max) adds approximately 30 miles per 15-minute charge. The E-Transit is not suitable for long-range hauling routes. For mixed urban/highway operations, the standard EcoBoost Transit remains more practical.
The Ford Transit is assembled at Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri — the largest Ford assembly plant in the world by square footage. It is a fully US-made commercial vehicle, sharing the plant with the Ford F-150.
