Overview

The 2025 Ford Explorer continues its position as one of America's most popular mid-size 3-row SUVs. Now in its sixth generation, the Explorer was thoroughly redesigned in 2020 with a rear-wheel-drive-biased platform that improved dynamics and interior space.

For 2025, Ford adds new color options and expands the Timberline's standard equipment list. The Explorer competes directly with the Chevrolet Traverse, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and Hyundai Palisade.

Performance & Fuel Economy

Real-World Data
28 mpg
HWY 70 MPH
21 mpg
CITY STOP/GO
19 mpg
TOWING HWY EST

EPA highway rating measured at 55 mph. Real-world highway at 70 mph is typically 26–28 mpg. Towing near max capacity reduces highway fuel economy 27–37% β€” budget accordingly for trailer trips.

The base 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder produces 300 hp and 310 lb-ft β€” ample for family use. It returns up to 21 city / 28 hwy mpg in RWD form.

The ST's 3.0L twin-turbo V6 delivers 400 hp, cutting 0–60 to ~5.5 seconds while maintaining 5,600-lb tow capability. A 10-speed automatic is standard across all trims.
